BBC started its illustrated journey in December 1997 in online industry on a low note. It had just two sections and the website design was far from impressive and so was the navigation. But, the message that it had delivered was loud and clear. Since then, with the changes of time, BBC website has undergone different transitional stages; some of which were really good and some were not. However, it had obviated the fact that BBC is not here to follow the trend rather, it is here to create new trend.

A Quick Recap of What It Had Been
But given the organic nature of its website and its structural complexities, it was very hard to put it in a new garb i.e. to give it a new look. Just two years ago, BBC’s website was mainly monitored by a group of independently working designing teams. Therefore, it was clear that the structure of the website was somewhat schizophrenic in nature (as pointed out By Bronwyn van der Merwe).

Global Visual Language 2.0
Next comes the most crucial stage, when people at BBC took initiate to make their website look modern and sophisticated and thus the concept “Global Visual Language 2.0” came into being. Its sole objective was the perfect unification of interactivity and visual pleasure to make its website more user friendly and irresistible in both mobile and web version simultaneously. To be honest, the final outcome was seriously sensational: Continue reading ‘BBC Want To Back In Business With A Brand New Look’ »

Most of the time the images used on a website slows down its loading speed. But the use of images in a website design enhances the aesthetic appeal of a site and its use can not be ignored while designing a web page. As a web designer you need to strike a balance between using graphics and not slowing down the loading time of a page by over using images.

Using optimized web graphic design is a good option to reduce the loading time of the web pages. Here are some basic tips to optimize your site graphics:

  • Image Type: It is very important to choose the right file type for the images you are using on your website pages. It is advisable to use GIF or PNG formats for illustrations, cartoons, buttons, icons and vector images. For full color photos you can use JPEG file formats.
  • Image Resolution: While using images for your web pages, try to use resolution of 72 dpi for them. As most of the computers are set to display this resolution, the site visitors will be able to get the graphics as it is used by a designer.
  • Changing Pixels: Sometimes editing a picture to give it a smoother finish increases its file memory. Graphic designers often alter the image pixels along the edges of color to adjust the contrast of the adjacent colors. This should be avoided as much as possible as images with increased file memory will slow the page loading time.
  • Background Images: Blurring background images is a good way to optimize JPEG images used on a site. The file size of an image can be reduced further by blurring the non critical portions of a site image.
  • Cropping Image: The dimension of an image can be minimized by cropping it. Detect the main objects of the photo and you can crop the unnecessary elements from the picture.
  • Use of Thumbnails: Instead of using the full sized image on the main page, you can use its thumbnail view. Online viewers who are willing to see the image will be able to see it on a different page. Using thumbnail view for the full images will decrease the loading time of the main page.

Google.Cn Bids Adieu to China

Poisted by : WebGuru     Under : Google     1 Comment

The long tussle between China and Google has ultimately snowballed into an unprecedented crisis. Google has finally announced that it is not interested to continue its operation in Mainland China, and has finally redirected Google.Cn to Google.Com.Hk, where users will be able to view uncensored version of Google search result.

Google is aware of the fact that Chinese Government may ban its people from accessing Google.Com.Uk anytime soon, but still it refuses to budge under any pressure. Google’s strong stance against the Chinese hegemony is clear indication of its unwillingness to kowtow to Chinese authority or to make a compromise with its core policy. Though both the parties have made it clear that this development will have no impact on Sino-USA relationship, but things may take an ugly turn if Chinese government takes any stern action against this leading search engine company in near future.

So far, Chinese Authorities have taken draconian actions against Google by censoring its search result. So, Google did not have any other alternative to hit back to it by discontinuing its web search in China.

Trend tends to change every single second. Be it in science, art or in the glamorous world, trend has to be followed to keep pace with the changing environment and changing lifestyle. However, just a few years back, the impact of a new trend was not as severe as it is now. First it was Facebook and now it is Twitter that is keeping us updated with the news that is powerful enough to shape the world. What started as a simple medium of expression, has eventually evolved or to be precise, metamorphosed into a powerful medium whose sole purpose is to reflect the on going trend and news around the world. But as the days wear on, it is becoming more or less clear that Twitter is slowly but surely taking a new shape on which it has no control. It seems that it is heading toward an inevitable end and that is becoming another trend-setter, which is anything but impressive.

Collection of News or Creation of News
From presidential election to simple tête-à-tête, Twitter is probably the best place on earth to discuss them. However, the entire news has to be summed up within 140 characters and that means, it has to be unique, informative, descriptive and pithy. Here lies the uniqueness of twitter. At the embryonic stage, Twitter started as a medium to reflect the things that were troubling the people in general or that had massive impacts on our life. But gradually, it has finally evolved as a medium where people gather just for the sake of gathering and nothing else. It is becoming a platform where people are discussing things that have already been featured in the list of popular topics. It is getting crammed with users who are ever willing to create new trend rather than voicing their concern on the ongoing issues.
