For freelancers in the website design industry, having a good sales strategy is important. There are a multitude of freelancers in the market and thus, to survive, you need not only creative skills but also good selling skills to get more projects and stay in the good books of your clients.
I would try to offer some strategies here to help you showcase and promote your website design work to potential clients.
Strategy 1: Increase/Enhance Your Visibility: This would help you cement your position as a freelancer in the market. The more visible you are, the greater the scope for you to get more work. You will also be able to show something to your prospective clients in case they have queries.
Below are some things you can do:
- Go for blog customization – you must already have a blog. Customizing it would help you in your business.
- Be active on social networks – you must be aware of the power of social media. Use that power to pull more business.
- Become a member of web design related forums, follow and comment on design related blogs and put a link back to your website/portfolio.
- Send photos of your creations to any local publishing such as magazines, periodicals, newspapers etc.
- Advertise your work in local magazines or newspapers.
Strategy 2: Do Not Hesitate to Reach Out: Why should you always want the clients to find you? Why don’t you go hunting clients yourself by distributing your business card to business owners who can give you a project? Who knows, you might get a project from someone you least expected!
Interact with as many people as you can. Spread the word about your work. You never know who may be in need of website design. Also, contact a professional website design company because oftentimes, these companies outsource their new projects when their in-house designers are busy with their existing projects.
Strategy 3: Be Honest: Do not make skyscraping promises if you cannot really keep them. So it’s safe to claim what you really can do. If you are honest, you will automatically go to the good books of your clients.
Strategy 4: Treat Your Client’s Business with Respect: Just as your freelancing business is important to you, your clients’ businesses are also important to them. Listen to their requirements carefully and take care to ensure that your clients get what they want. Treat your client’s business as if it’s your own.
Strategy 5: Do Not be Disheartened by Rejections: Every professional has to face rejections at some or the other point in their career. As you deal with more clients, you will realize that not all of them will accept your proposals. This is no reason to feel upset. Rejection does not mean your client has some personal vendetta against you.
Strategy 6: Highlight Your USP….Always: Promote your unique selling point/proposition as much as you can. Your USP is what makes you different from other web designing freelancers. Tell your prospective clients explicitly why they should hire you instead of others and what is it that stands you apart from the crowd.
Strategy 7: Never Stop Selling: Your sales endeavors should be continuous. Just because you are busy with a project, it does not mean you have to stop selling. Make it a habit to work and sell consistently. This would secure you a steady flow of projects.
