E-commerce, or Electronic Commerce, is the process of buying and selling products over electronic systems such as the Internet. There are several ways in which e-commerce is conducted – business to consumer (B2C), business to business (B2B) e-commerce, consumer to consumer (C2C), peer to peer (P2P) and m-commerce or transactions over mobile devices.

Here’s a brief note on the different types of e-commerce:

Business to Consumer (B2C) – General web users are acquainted with this form of e-commerce. The term ‘online shopping’ best explains its basic concept in which offline retailers with websites and other Internet marketers use the web to market their products to their target consumers.

Business to Business (B2B) – As the name explains, both the seller and the buyer are commercial entities. For example, a hardware seller first buys hardware from a hardware manufacturer and then sells it to its consumers. B2C follows B2B.

Consumer to Consumer (C2C) – Here, transaction takes place between two people who are not business entities. Sites like eBay best describe this concept; two people buy and sell over a third-party online marketing platform.

Peer to Peer (P2P) – Here, two people can share computer files by installing the required P2P software on their respective computers. Transaction is irrespective of a central web server. Example: Torrent.

M-Commerce – Mobile optimized sites allow mobile users with web accessibility to buy products using the mobile.

E-commerce has global reach and permits worldwide commercial transactions. It is an interactive and personalized medium for buying and selling over the Internet and other computer networks.
