What makes a website design good?

For years now, experts argue that an effective website is a good website and that effectiveness of a website is irrelevant to its aesthetics, color scheme, images, and anything which is generally believed to make a design attractive. If a website design yields the desired results for a business, it’s a good website, or a well designed website, irrespective of whether color-schemes and images appeal to critiques. If a site works, it works and warrants little discussion otherwise.

Of course, there are basics of web designing without which no website can be expected to succeed. These are:

Consistency in Design – The basic design and color-scheme of the website should be consistent across all pages of the website. Consistency helps branding.
Ease of Navigation – Make your website usable. A structured navigation helps find information on your site quickly and easily. This improves user-experience and also has retentive use.
Length of Copy – A business website should ideally have content anywhere between 500 to 1000 words on each web page, or less, depending on the subject of content. Also, content should be designed using relevant H1, H2, bullet lists, bold text, etc, in short paragraphs to improve readability.
Fast Loading Site – Large images, Flash files, videos or audios increase the load time of a site. Image, Flash and interactive media optimization helps websites load faster, thereby retaining customers for longer on websites.
KISS – Keep it simple, silly. Complex designs and highly creative graphics might be artistic, but web usability requires simplicity and ease of comprehension.
