Power of Color in Website Design

Choosing the right color combination is a creative block for every designers. It takes experimentation and patience and there is minimum chance of making a wild guess. Now, colors do not always evoke the same feeling. For say, Red should not be associated with anger all the time and blue does not necessarily indicate clam. In fact, it has been observed that our perception of color is by and large subjective and which is why you need to have a better understanding the importance of colors if you are to design a great website.

Here we are going to share a long list of dos that you can give a try while sketching out a color scheme for your website. However, remember that there are some glorious exceptions to those rules and therefore, you can dare to deviate from these rules if your wish to make a difference:

Patterns: This is a big No No in the field of website design. Use of patterns is an old techniques and it makes it hard for the readers to read and does not make any sense. It just increases page loading time and increases confusion.

Link: There is no need of reinventing the wheel, so you will be better off if you use the same old but useful technique of using the blue color for denoting links. If you have any doubt about this, you should better shake it off because even Google follows this.

Limited Colors: The less, the better. You should not use all the colors available in a website. It looks funny and often does not serve any useful purpose. Use color sparingly to draw out the desired effect.

Try Web Safe Colors: Since Mac and PC render color differently, you should put your trust on web safe colors unless you want to face a humiliating situation.

Avoid Clashing Colors: Would you like to read a newspaper printed in blistering green text against a bright red background. It will surely make you color blind. Avoid colors that can make readers strain their eyes. Use sober color combination.

Shadows and Gradients: These two are big hit among website designers. Though they may look a bit Web 2.0-ish, they still do wonder.

Contrast: Contrast is a decisive factor in determining the fate of a website. You can make a website look great even if it is based in a single color by exploiting the advantages of contrast. Play around with it and you will get the desired effect.

Fluorescent: Never ever fluorescent colors. These colors have already been relegated to the bin.

See Whether It Fits Your Website or Not: Pink is a hit among girls and blue is used profusely for designing corporate website. Black is predominately used for gaming websites. However, you can try some experiments but generally; we are used to some color combination and that means, you will have little scope for experimentation. For example, you cannot use pink in an eco friendly website. It does not look good.
